Thank you for your interest in volunteering at the Whitby Public Library! We have two categories for volunteering.
Visiting Library Service
Visiting Library Service provides library materials to Whitby residents who cannot visit the Library due to illness, disability, or age. Items are selected by staff and delivered by a volunteer on a regular schedule.
For more information please visit our Volunteering with the Visiting Library Service page to learn more about our volunteer opportunity.
Teen Volunteering
Our teen volunteering opportunities are tailored for students in Grades 7 through 12 unless otherwise requested, who are eager to contribute to their community while gaining valuable experience and skills.
Become a Teen Reviewer (Grade 7-12)
Earn community service hours by reviewing books, music, movies, video games, and more from Whitby Public Libraries' collection. Each review earns one community service hour, with up to 10 items counting towards your hours. Reviews will be posted on our WPL Teen Picks account and used in Library promotions. Submissions accepted on an ongoing basis.
Reading Buddies (Grade 9-12)
Become a mentor and inspire younger readers! As a reading buddy, high school students have the opportunity to partner with elementary school students to enhance their reading skills and foster a love for literature. (Central Library and Brooklin Branch only)
Teen Advisory Group (Grade 7-12)
Develop leadership skills while assisting with library services, programs, and special events. (Brooklin Branch only)
Teen Advisory Council (Grades 7-12)
Members will form a special council to advise on library services and programs. Applications open in August of each year. A limited number of candidates will be selected for interviews. (Central Library only)
Note: Central teen volunteers are required to participate in a Volunteer Training Session before accepting opportunities.
General Teen Volunteering (Grades 9 - 12)
Whether you're interested in assisting with programming prep or events, there's a volunteering opportunity for you! Open to students in Grades 9 through 12, our general volunteering program offers a diverse range of experiences to suit your interests and schedule. Applications are now managed through Better Impact, where you can easily apply, track your hours, and explore available opportunities.
