Inspirational speakers and programs help celebrate Black History Month.

Mary Anne Chambers is a person with a story to tell. Her long list of accomplishments includes being a member of the Order of Ontario, a notable provincial politician, and a passionate academic advocate. To help mark Black History Month, Mary Anne will share her inspiring memoir, From the Heart, at the Central Library on February 4.  This riveting narrative features the author’s authentic voice as she shares her personal journey as a young woman in a new country who was warned she wouldn’t get very far. From the Heart is a story about grit, digging deep, and staying focused on what matters most. This event is in partnership with the Whitby Diversity and Inclusion Advisory Committee.

The Library will also feature engaging and interactive Black History Month displays. During the month of February, look for exhibits celebrating historic figures and inspirational stories.  Our staff have curated multiple book lists featuring a variety of genres for adults, kids, and teens.

We also have children’s programs on tap including our Art and Soul program. On February 7, kids in grades 2-6 will create vibrant artwork inspired by iconic painter Alma Thomas.  Our “Green Means Go” storytime and craft at the Central Library takes place on February 8. This interactive program will help honour Garett Morgan, the inventor of the traffic light.  Looking to celebrate Black History Month this February? The Whitby Library is the place to be as your doorway to discovery.
