A glimpse into the past: New treasures arrive at the Whitby Archives.

The Whitby Archives has received a generous donation of historical material that sheds new light on the people, places, and events that have shaped our community.

The collection includes photographs, postcards, letters, documents, scrapbooks, and other unique records, with a special focus on Whitby’s Post Office and local history. Financial support accompanying the donation has also allowed the Archives to purchase much-needed shelving, ensuring these materials can be safely stored and preserved for years to come.

Among the collection are fascinating snapshots of Whitby’s past, from vintage postcards to photographs celebrating the town’s centennial. Together, they help tell the story of a growing community and the people who called it home.

This donation is more than a collection of historical documents. It’s helping preserve Whitby’s story and making it easier for future generations to explore our community’s past. The Whitby Public Library gratefully acknowledges the financial support of an Anonymous Donor at Durham Community Foundation.

The Archives has been busy beyond this exciting acquisition. In 2026, staff hosted a popular walking tour of neighbourhoods surrounding the Central Library. Digitizing is always a top priority with this year’s work focusing on the construction of the Library between 2004 and 2006. Our Archivist partnered with the Oshawa Museum to explore the historical contributions of women in Whitby Township as well as supporting community heritage initiatives, including food tours and signage projects with the Town of Whitby.

Interest in Whitby’s history is also growing far beyond Durham Region. The Archives has seen a 200% increase in inquiries from American researchers, driven in part by changes to Canadian citizenship rules that have prompted many people to explore their family connections to Canada.

Looking ahead, the Archives is preparing a new partnership with Whitby 55+ focused on preserving family photographs and documents, while continuing the important work of processing archival collections and making more materials accessible to researchers.

Community members interested in exploring Whitby’s history can book an appointment or contact the Archivist directly at archives@whitbylibrary.ca for assistance.
