We are deeply saddened and frustrated with the discovery of swastikas in the washroom at the Central Library earlier this week. There is absolutely no room for hate or intolerance at the Whitby Public Library.
The Library echoes Mayor Roy's statement from January 27, on International Holocaust Remembrance Day, that “In Whitby, we take pride in being a welcoming and inclusive community.” These recent acts are completely at odds with our values of diversity and inclusion and serves as a distressing reminder that there is still much work to be done in our communities to combat hate.
We continue to work with Durham Regional Police to aid in their investigation. We are committed to our mission statement: to nurture a culture of acceptance where everyone feels a sense of belonging at the Whitby Public Library. Hate does not have a home here.
